In Inside Higher Ed, LJAN Columnists Disagree (Somewhat) About Google's Latest Deal
May 22, 2009
Inside Higher Ed followed up on the University of Michigan's announcement (LJ coverage) that amended contract terms will allow libraries that provided scanned books to Google to seek arbitration about the price of Google's database.
Interestingly enough, two of the academic librarians quoted are columnists for the LJ Academic Newswire, and they found themselves disagreeing somewhat.
Temple University's Steven Bell, while acknowledging that the new agreement wouldn't "totally mitigate the concerns of the library community about Google's monopoly," said he was "optimistic" about the project. Barbara Fister of Gustavus Adolphus College, however, warned that "libraries and scholars and anyone who cares about freedom of information should push for a greater public good out of this agreement."
