At Palin Rally, Democrats Lob the Library Issue (Incorrectly)

October 6, 2008
See LJ's complete Sarah Palin and Libraries coverage.
For now, it seems, the Republicans and Democrats will be arguing past each other on the issue of Republican VP nominee Sarah Palin's relationship with the Wasilla Public Library when she was city mayor a dozen years ago.

Palin recently declared, "I certainly never advocated banning books," even though there's evidence that, as a City Council member, she expressed dismay about the presence of one book in the library and that her inquiries went beyond the typical.

Then again, I'm not sure the California Democratic Party did much for the discourse when, across from a rally in Carson, as the Press-Telegram reported, it placed a mobile electronic billboard displaying questions sent by text message or e-mail, including "Did you ban books from the Wasilla library?"

She didn't. That much we know. But we should know some more.

"...her inquiries went beyond the typical." Who is deciding what is "typical". What scale is used to measure "typical". And what fear should be instilled by an "atypical" QUESTION regarding library materials?
