Watching Obama's Inauguration, at the Library

January 7, 2009 If libraries are the heart of the community, then, at noon EST on January 20, maybe they should remember that a lot of people will be thinking about the historic inauguration of President Barack Obama.

The Ferguson Library, Stamford, CT, has the right idea; it will broadcast the inauguration live on a big screen in the Main Library auditorium. And the San Francisco Public Library will hold a viewing in the Koret Auditorium, with a bonus: refreshments. Various libraries in the Boston area are planning such inaugural events, as well.

We had viewings at the University of California San Diego libraries too. I'm at the Biomedical Library and we had about 50 people in the room by 9am. We don't get broadcast TV, so we were showing streaming video. We had to switch streams a few times and ended up having to hook my trusty old FM radio up to the speakers to get good quality audio. It was a really cool morning - applause broke out in the room a couple of times even though we were just clapping to ourselves.

At the Warner Library in Tarrytown, NY, we had a full house in our larger meeting room who enthusiastically--joyfully--watched the Inaugural Cermonies onscreen via an LCD projector from a laptop computer downloading the CNN Yahoo live streaming video(chosen because it provided the best image on our ad hoc media arrangement). The downloaded was flawless. Many participants mentioned how glad they were to share the event with their community at the library, rather than watching TV at home. It was a great time. See warnerlibrary.org for a photo.
