A Hero Pilot and His Library Book
February 3, 2009
Chesley Sullenberger, the pilot who coolly guided his US Airways plane into an unusual but safe landing in the New York City’s Hudson River on January 15, lost a library book when the plane went down.
So the straight-arrow pilot, according to the Fresno Bee, asked the California State University Library, Fresno for an extension and waiver of overdue fees.
The library waived all fees and is dedicating the replacement book to him, the newspaper said.
The book's topic? Professional ethics. How come he was using a university library? He got it through interlibrary loan from his local library.
Peter McDonald, the university’s dean of library services, noted that Sullenberger’s “name should have been kept confidential because of privacy issues. But now that the story's broke, we thank him again and we will replace the book in his honor."
