Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question?September 19, 2008
Hoping to accent the the value of libraries, American Library Association President Jim Rettig is urging librarians and library advocates to submit questions for the October 7 Presidential debate between Senators Barack Obama and John McCain, which will be held at Belmont University, Nashville, TN. The debate, one of three, will be moderated by Tom Brokaw, who will both call on audience members and ask questions submitted online. The Commission on Presidential Debates (historically a bit stuffy) has partnered with MySpace (historically not) on MyDebates, which is already live but will start accepting questions on September 25. "The more questions submitted, the more likely a library question will be asked," Rettig observed. That, of course, raises the question: what exactly should librarians be asking about? Funding? National Security Letters? GOP VP candidate Sarah Palin's record? Posted by Norman Oder on September 19, 2008 | Comments (44) Industries: News & Features

"Senator McCain, if you have voted alongside George Bush and his corrupt policies over 90% of the time please explain how do you plan to clean up the corrupt mess in Washington if you are a part of it? Is that not just another one of your political tactics and more corruption on your part? I am Angie Hylton and I approve of this message.

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? Amir commented: I am a 30 yr. old male with no stocks, bonds, or any investments and I make less than $75,000 annual salary. I also do not own a business, yet, several months ago I like many other Americans received a $400 check from the government directly into my bank account...no questions asked. Whether Democrat or Republican, IMO, nothing means more to me than IMMEDIATE cash in my pocket...can I expect the same under a future administration?

Charity should begin at home. It is nice to help others but we have too many people in this country who need it first.

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? zefrehc commented: With all the money woes currently going on, I was appalled to see an article in the paper today on how much each candidate has currently raised for their campaigns (over 456 million dollars). To see this kind of money raised and donated for political gain. I just don't see how people can donate money for political interests, when you don't see anything in return...or is that what we are all not seeing.

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? gene commented: We keep talking about energy independence, but neither candidate talks about improving building codes. The majority of energy used in the world is used to condition (heat and cool) buildings. With the technology we have today, there is no reason to not demand better insulated buildings (greater thermal mass, living roofs) and more efficient heating and cooling systems like geothermal heat pumps. This is something that must happen through regulations, as builders look at short term profits in making buildings as cheap as possible and don’t look at long term cost or energy consumption.

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? RHarley commented: As a technician working in customer service (the customer being the U.S. taxpayer) in an agency under the Department of Agriculture, I would like to know what "Cutting Government Spending" means. My experience is that cutting spending means reduced ability to serve the public, dirty or closed campgrounds; toilets, boating areas. Dangerous un-maintained motorized and non-motorized trails, you get the picture?? The statement to cut government spending is not good enough, be specific!

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? jennifer commented: I am 25 and a single mother. And there is a serious issue with the government assistance. I make too much money for food stamps, but yet I don't make enough for my own home in a nice area. Here is my question, with all the people that abuse the system. And just are too lazy to bust there butt, to try and help themselves. How does either one of the candidates plan on fixing the welfare system, it is just being abused. Drug addicts don't have to work just go to classes everyday and the government supports them. That is just one example. Would like to know if anyone plans on fixing it.

In response to: Want To Ask the Presidential Candidates a Question? Concerned citizen commented: What I would like to know, is what are you going to do for us? The people. The people that are working trying to make ends meet, but can't. The people that have gotten abused by lending companies and now owe so much money that they will never have the chance to own their own home. I think that all too often people are focusing on the big picture - helping get businesses back on their feet, but what about the people that make that business work? You can bail out the big businesses all you want, but if the middle and lower class families continue to struggle, then who is going to have money to keep the businesses running? In order to fix a big problem, you have to start small. Helping people get their credit squared away to be able to move on with their future and put more money in to the economy. Provide help for the families that want to work and make a difference but can't afford to feed their families because the cost of electricity, heat, gas and rent/mortgages are so high. In the winter my family has to put extra blankets on their beds, and extra layers of clothes on because we can't afford to have the furnace running. We eat what is on sale at the market, because we can't afford to have well balanced meals every day, yet we don't qualify for any government assistance.
