ALA Journal—Show Floor Scene
June 23, 2007
As big a group of net geeks as librarians are, apparently you're caffeine junkies first and foremost, and noting the
hefty line waiting for an empty terminal at the Internet Cafe, I was surprised to see that the line at Starbucks was at least double.
Good crowd on the show floor, but the room is so Goliath it never seems too busy and the aisles—except, of course, for Random House and other publishers sporting both authors and free books and galleys, those aisles, fuhgetaboutit as we say in Noo Yawk, you couldn't hack your way through with a machete. I'm happy to report publisher freebies are plentiful. I'm even happier that many more publishers are bringing their adult stuff as well. A very welcomed change.
As I was saying, exhibits are crowded but comfy. Some cool new stuff, but my favorite of the day was EnvisionWare's Power PDA, a handheld RFID reader that lets librarians check out patron's items anywhere on the floor. Go to booth 3549 and check it out.
Gotta run. As JB would say, "more later."
