"Michael Jackson's This Is It" is expected to moonwalk onto DVD/Blu-ray in first quarter 2010, according to sources.
A DVD/Blu-ray street date has not been confirmed by the studio.
In trying to satisfy competing needs of video stores and theatrical exhibitors, sources say Sony wavered between a fourth-quarter 2009 and early next year release. Many retailers have pushed Sony Pictures Home Entertainment to debut it closer to the 2009 holiday shopping season in order to capitalize on heavy store traffic.
Ultimately, Sony decided to give exhibitors the chance to present "This Is It" for a longer theatrical stretch. Had "This Is It" arrived in stores by December, the theatrical-to-DVD window would have been unusually short.
"This Is It" grossed $20.1 million in its first day at the worldwide box office.
