David Shumaker, Associate Professor at Catholic University of America (CUA) in Washington, DC, was recently honored by the Special Libraries Association (SLA) with the 2009 Rose L. Vormelker Award for excellence in guiding and mentoring future information professionals and librarians. Since joining the CUA faculty, Shumaker has actively recruited students to the library profession and promoted the values of special librarianship. The students in his Marketing Information Services class participate in real-life practicum assignments in libraries.
Diane Wheeler Strauss, associate university librarian for collections and services at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, will retire March 1, 2010, after more than 36 years of service. She became associate university librarian for public services in 1992, and took on administrative responsibility for library collections in 2004. Prior to joining the UNC Library, she held positions at the Enoch Pratt Free Library in Baltimore, MD; the Univeristy of Wisconsin Madison School of Library and Information Studies; the May Memorial Library in Burlington, NC; and the U.S. Department of Labor Library in Washington, D.C.
