With No Budget Resolution in State Legislature, Philadelphia Library Warns of Closure
Without budget fix, all branches would close after October 2
-- Library Journal, 9/11/2009
The city of Philadelphia has prepared a "doomsday budget" in case the state legislature doesn't approve a new sales tax, as LJ reported last month, and the Free Library of Philadelphia is now warning starkly of the consequences. All libraries and library services would close after October 2 and all library materials would be due on October 1. Beginning today, the library announced a diminished borrowing period. "Even as we remain hopeful that the State Legislature will act and pass the enabling funding legislation, we wanted to notify all of our customers of this very possible outcome," the library said.
As of today, reports KYW radio, state legislators remain at an impasse.
