For a number of years, Library Journal has been previewing breast cancer titles in the September 1 issue so libraries can stock up in advance of October, Breast Cancer Awareness Month. Unfortunately, breast cancer isn't fading from the headlines or our consciousness any time soon. With the advent of our bimonthly BookSmack! newsletter, LJ now can push these titles out to you even sooner. This special edition of BookSmack!, compiled by LJ managing editor and resident cancer survivor Bette-Lee Fox, highlights the new books your collections will need to answer patron demand.   Breast cancer remains big news. In 2009, New York State cut 30 percent from its Cancer Services Program budget, the service that provides breast health screenings and treatment to low-income women. Meanwhile, new drugs known as PARP inhibitors are showing potential for some advanced cancers, and gene expression tests may factor into decisions regarding chemotherapy for early-stage breast cancer. more » » »
