Jersey boy Kevin Smith is a pop culture demigod. His films have a moderate but fiercely loyal following, and his “Evening With” personal appearances regularly sell out arenas from colleges to Carnegie Hall. He has more than a million Twitter followers, and his View Askiewniverse message board is overflowing with fans who gobbled up enough copies of 2007’s My Boring Ass Life to establish Smith as a NY Times best-selling author. This third print outing offers transcripts of the cream of his and producer Scott Mosier’s “SModcasts” (Smith/Mosier/podcasts). The SMods are hardcore no-holds barred, anything and everything goes. No subject is sacred, none taboo. The title is apt, as the two breeze through long and short takes on a variety of insane topics as far ranging as Stalin’s ape man army, if Helen Keller faked it, Pillow Babies, Hitler, dog sex, and a lengthy more-than-you-really-want-to-know discussion of Mosier’s vasectomy. The language is street-corner raw, as Smith drops F-Bombs etc., as freely as flicking ash off his cigarette, but you will laugh out loud reading this book (if you’ve seen his films you know what to expect). The text sports illustrations throughout that also are a blast. It’s not for everyone, but Shootin’ the Sh*t is entertaining as all hell and a slice of Kevin heaven for fans.
