Críticas Reviews Are Back: LJ and SLJ Resume Coverage of Spanish-Language Books
In response to reader demand, reviews of Spanish-language books for adults and children will appear on the LJ web site
-- Library Journal, 6/18/2009
In response to reader demand following the suspension of Críticas in February 2009, Library Journal and
School Library Journal have resumed reviewing Spanish-language books for adults and children on the LJ web site. This effort, which also includes links to the archive, is sponsored by Baker & Taylor. Over eight years ago, reader requests spurred the launch of the original Críticas, the English-language source of coverage of the Spanish-language market that for the ensuing years, in various iterations, was the go-to place for librarians needing to purchase materials for their burgeoning Spanish-speaking communities.
When market conditions drove the suspension of the publication, the editors at LJ and SLJ heard about the acute problem created by the gap in coverage as reader feedback flooded into the office.
Now, with the support of Baker & Taylor, LJ and SLJ are striving to again meet the need for timely, authoritative reviews of current Spanish-language books. You'll find monthly review coverage of adult and children's titles that cover the spectrum of patrons' interests.
Adult books will be reviewed monthly by the same expert reviewers who have covered these books for Críticas for years, led by former Críticas editor Aída Bardales. Children's titles will be reviewed at least every other month by a group of youth services librarians and subject specialists, led by Freda Mosquera, youth services outreach librarian for Broward County Library, FL.
