Gerald A. Notaro, University Librarian and Head of Media Services for The Nelson Poynter Memorial Library, University of South Florida St. Petersburg, has been appointed Interim Dean of the Library. Mr. Notaro begins his term starting his 25th year at USF. He began his library career in New York in 1976 after graduating from SUNY Buffalo's School of Information and Library Science.
Associate Professor Cathy Blake and Assistant Professor Miles Efron will join the Graduate School of Library and Information Science (GSLIS) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign or the Fall 2009 semester. Blake works on information retrieval in the context of health sciences, with a particular emphasis on accelerating scientific discovery by synthesizing evidence from text. Efron's teaching and research focus on information retrieval. He studies the statistical properties of human language in efforts to improve the effectiveness of search engines. He comes to GSLIS from the University of Texas at Austin, where he taught in the School of Information since 2004. Efron received his Ph.D. in information and library science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2003. Efron’s wife, Jessica, will join the University Library as a cataloger.
Jessica Mirasol has accepted the position of Librarian Archivist for Music Collections at the University Libraries of Old Dominion University, Norfolk, VA. Mirasol was previously the Librarian and Instrumental Music Teacher at Cardinal Maida Academy in Vandergrift, PA. She has her MLS with a focus in Archival Preservation from University of Pittsburgh and a BA in Music Education from Indiana University/Purdue University Ft. Wayne, IN.
