Scribner. Jul. 2009. c.272p. ISBN 978-1-4165-9131-3. $25. LIT Released posthumously in 1964, Hemingway’s A Moveable Feast long has been a fan favorite for its depiction of the magical artists’ fairyland of 1920s expatriate Paris. It was somewhat of a sham, alas, as Ernesto’s last wife, Mary (abetted by publisher Scribner) reedited the manuscript, shuffling chapters—some marked by him as incomplete or unusable—and cobbled a faux intro from other scraps. She also shaped the text to make her late husband appear less dishonorable for dumping first wife Hadley and their child for another woman he later married. This Restored Edition, utilizing Hemingway’s original versions, tells a different story: Hadley clearly is the victim—and the book’s hero—and Ernest a rotten bastard for leaving her. Although he loved his second wife, these pages drip with guilt and remorse. Written late in his life, some parts only weeks before his suicide, the sketches smack of one remembering their youth better/worse than reality. » » » Xpress ReviewsXpress Reviews—First Look at New BooksAnn B.
