Ray English, Azariah Smith Root, director of libraries at Oberlin College, Oberlin, OH, has been named the 2009 winner of the Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award. Named in honor of one of the pioneers of library automation, the Atkinson Award recognizes an academic librarian who has made “significant contributions in the area of library automation or management and has made notable improvements in library services or research.”
English was singled out for “transformative leadership within his own institution, his state and region, in ACRL and as a national leader in scholarly communications through SPARC,” said Sarah Michalak, Hugh C. Atkinson Memorial Award committee chair and university librarian and associate provost for University Libraries at the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. English will receive a cash award and a citation during the American Library Association (ALA) Annual Conference in Chicago, at the Library Leadership and Management Association (LLAMA) President’s Program...
Teresa F. Strozik, an automation pioneer, died January 2. Strozik began her library career at Syracuse University, NY, serving in a variety of roles leading to a stint as assistant director of technical services. In 1974 she was named associate director for Library Services at the State University of New York, where she was responsible for the implementation of the Online Computer Library Catalog (OCLC).
