The first major appointment of George W. Bush’s post-presidency has been made. Acting Archivist of the United States Adrienne C. Thomas, who took over for the recently resigned Allen Weinstein, has announced that Alan C. Lowe will be the new director of the George W. Bush Presidential Library. The appointment is effective April 12, 2009. Lowe is currently the executive director of the Howard H. Baker, Jr. Center for Public Policy at the University of Tennessee Knoxville.
Lowe brings a wealth of experience, including 14 years of working with the National Archives Presidential Libraries system, where he helped oversee 12 presidential libraries located throughout the nation, and has served as interim director of the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library (Hyde Park, NY). He was also an archivist at the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library. The George W. Bush Library is temporarily located in Lewisville, TX, and is administered by the National Archives and Records Administration. Eventually, the permanent George W. Bush Presidential Library and Museum, the product of the largest presidential library fundraising effort in history, will be on the campus of Southern Methodist University in Dallas, as part of the George W. Bush Presidential Center.
