- Untitled memoir scheduled for 2010 release
- Financial terms undisclosed
The recent rumors that Laura Bush was shopping for a book deal apparently were true: Scribner announced January 5 that it had signed the First Lady for a 2010 volume on her life the AP reports. The book currently is untitled, and financial terms of the contract were undisclosed, but insiders assert that the advance would likely be in the $8-million range received by Hillary Clinton. “I am curious about Laura Bush and I believe others—people who you would expect to be supporters of a Republican First Lady, and other people too, are just as curious about her," Scribner publisher Susan Moldow said announcing the volume. “She was forthcoming about her own reticence. She understands that she has not put herself forward and that this is her chance to share the information she wants to share. I know it will be interesting, in a surprising, unfiltered way.”
Bush, a librarian and avid champion of reading and literacy, said that she is excited about telling “the stories of the extraordinary people I’ve met in my life, particularly during my years in the White House.” Past books by First Ladies have enjoyed brisk sales, often outgunning presidential memoirs. And Curtis Sittenfeld's novel American Wife, based on Laura Bush, is already a best seller.
