From 1949 to the present there has always been at least one best of the year anthology. They are a cataloger’s nightmare with many title changes and individual editors moving from one annual anthology to another, by themselves or in combination with other editors. It is simpler to just list the editors. Names printed in bold edit current annual anthologies.

Locus Online The mother lode of science fiction websites. You can get to almost anything related to science fiction through their Links Portal website. To find out what books are hot you can check on their main page a monthly Locus Bestsellers list and an on-going New and Notable Books.
Locus Index to Science Fiction Awards While available on the main website this site is worth a special mention. All science fiction awards are extensively covered and cross-referenced in a number of indexes.
Locus Index to Science Fiction: Site Directory There are links on this site to all the different indexes that are available through Locus. The Locus Indexes inventories every science fiction novel, anthology and magazine short story, indexed by both author and title and magazine. The Index to Science Fiction Anthologies and Collections indexes the same with the exception of novels.
Internet Speculative Fiction Database This massive database also indexes novels, short stories and anthologies, with the extra-added attraction of being able to list author’s stories in either alphabetical or chronological order.

On-Line Magazines
There are an awful lot of science fiction magazines on-line. And many of them are not of a very high quality, especially when it comes to fiction. But there are a number of very notable exceptions.
Infinite Matrix An excellent e-zine that includes fiction, reviews, essays short stories, by authors like Ursula LeGuin, Bruce Sterling, Terry Bisson and Michael Swanwick.
Infinity Plus A wonderful source of a lot of quality science fiction, donated by authors who wish to see their stories read after they disappear from the public’s eye after their magazine or anthology appearance. Many of the best of the best have stories on this site.
One of the most important trends in science fiction publishing is the quantity and quality of the small press specializing in genre fiction. The Locus site on Publishers is exhaustive. But of particular note for collection development are the many publishers who are reprinting classic science fiction and anthologizing important authors that have been bypassed by mainstream publishers.
Arkham House Arkham House is the granddaddy of the science fiction, horror, and fantasy small press. While it was started mainly as an outlet for the horror writings of H.P. Lovecraft, it has in the past two decades published a number of exceptional science fiction anthologies, mostly of current authors.
Baen Books Baen Books is a subsidiary of Pocket Books/Simon and Schuster and is the only mainstream publisher on this list. For the last few years Baen Books has been bringing out a number of mass-market reprints of well loved but mostly forgotten science fiction writers. So far they have reprinted a number of books by James Schmitz and Keith Laumer, and are about to start reprinting works by Murray Leinster. All of these stories are between 25 and 50 years old, yet they sell so well that Baen keeps adding more reprint titles.
Darkside Press This publisher has recently begun and excellent series of high quality reprints that quickly sell out. They have reprinted four collections of Fritz Leiber (two are horror, two science fiction, with more to come) and collections of the science fiction by John Wyndham and Cleve Cartmill
Golden Gryphon Press Started by the late Jim Turner, former editor of Arkham House, Golden Gryphon has brought out many important anthologies by authors such as, James Patrick Kelly, Neal Barrett, Jr., Joe R. Lansdale, Michael Bishop and Ian Watson.
Haffner Press The books released by this one-man operation are a labor of love. Haffner specialization is reprinting classic stories from the pulp magazines. They are four volumes into reprinting the complete short fiction of Jack Williamson.
NESFA Press NESFA, short for The New England Science Fiction Association, is the premier publisher of classic science fiction. With the exception of most of the titles put out especially for science fiction conventions, every title in their catalog is worthwhile. Their massive anthologies of Cyril Kornbluth, William Tenn, Eric Frank Russell, Frederic Brown, Hal Clement, and Murray Leinster are just plain essential.
Tachyon Publications Tachyon has reprinted works by Stanley Weinbaum, Ward Moore, and Clifford D. Simak and has printed new works by authors such as Jack McDevitt and Nancy Kress.
Wildside Press Wildside Press is an on-demand publisher that has a very wide selection of subjects, besides fantasy, horror, and science fiction. Science fiction authors they have reprinted include Greg Bear, Avram Davidson, Katherine Maclean, and R.A. Lafferty. They have also printed anthologies by rising authors, such as Paul Park and Charlie Stross
