Serials Solutions Adds Single Sign-On Authentication to 360 Search

Josh Hadro -- Library Journal, 10/7/2008 9:45:00 AM

  • Single Sign-On authentication added to 360 Search
  • Unified access through Athens or Shibboleth to federated search resources

Serials Solutions recently announced the addition of Single Sign-On (SSO) access control to its 360 Search federated search product. Now, according to the company, “users only have to authenticate once per browser session and are able to easily move between the 360 Search interface and native resource interfaces without re-entering login information.”

SSO allows institutions to use Athens or Shibboleth, identity verification tools, to grant remote access to licensed services. Users then only have to identify themselves with a single log in credential to use a variety of resources that normally would each require their own log in. This in turn enables institutions to provide remote users the same kind of access to licensed library services as location-based authentication would allow. Moreover, SSO potentially frees staff from fielding time-consuming password requests and clarifications.
