A special collections library at the University of South Carolina (USC) will be named for former U.S. Sen. Ernest F. “Fritz” Hollings. USC officials this week announced that the $18 million, 50,000-square-foot building, will be christened the Ernest F. Hollings Special Collections Library, and will be located behind the Thomas Cooper Library.
The Hollings Library addition will house USC’s growing Rare Books and Special Collections and provide a permanent home for the university’s S.C. Political Collections, which document the careers and contributions of many of the state’s political leaders. Hollings, who donated his personal papers to the library’s collection in 1989, said he was “deeply honored” by the designation. The new library, which will include space for teaching, exhibits, and collections as well as an auditorium and a digitization center was made possible by a $14-million federal appropriation secured by Hollings.
