Bibliotheca Adds EM/RFID Hybrid Options

Josh Hadro -- Library Journal, 8/26/2008 6:46:00 AM

  • Security gates and self-check machines to feature EM/RFID hybrid detection ability
  • Allows for phased transition without disrupting circulation

New security gates and self-check machines from RFID vendor Bibliotheca are the latest products to sport a hybrid detection method that reads both Electromagnetic (EM) and radio frequency identification (RFID) tag information. These hybrid detection systems are marketed to libraries just beginning or still considering the transition to an RFID-tagged collection. With the ability to read both the new and the old formats, hybrid readers like these allow circulation to continue without major disruption during the changeover phase. “Now libraries can continue using EM, while making the transition to RFID over time,” said Lamar Jackson, Bibliotheca CEO and president.

The recent announcement from Bibliotheca includes two EM/RFID hybrid products: BiblioGate and Biblio SelfCheck. BiblioGate boasts security features such as “acoustic and visual alarm signals” and “remote diagnostics,” while the SelfCheck stations offer integration “with all leading library systems,” and supports self-service functions such as item check out and check in, fine payment, and the renewal of materials.
