InfoTech: Grand County PL Contracts with LibLime

Michael Rogers -- Library Journal, 8/4/2008 12:18:00 PM

  • Was 2007 Best Small Library in America
  • First libarary in Utah to use Koha
  • Support and cost heavy factors in selection

LibLime July 31 announced that the Grand County Public Library, UT, LJ’s 2007 Best Small Library in America, has contracted for a Koha Classic open source solution for the ILS. The vendor said that the facility’s collection of 50,000 items will be hosted on a server on site at the library, which also contracted with LibLime for data migration and support on their Koha system. “We have chosen Koha for one simple reason; the ability to customize,” said Director Carrie Valdes. “Our current product is adequate but lacks the functionality needed especially as we receive new grants and lacks the ability to run the types of reports that grantees require and the company has little interest in ‘fixing’ it.”

Grand County is the first library in Utah to choose Koha and Valdes said they “are excited to be an example for others.” She cited the lack of in-house programming skills. and cost also was “a huge issue” and found that support from LibLime “is very reasonable compared to paying proprietary systems for support.”
