Francisco Goldman’s The Art of Political Murder (Grove) has won the inaugural WOLA-Duke Book Award
for Human Rights in Latin America. The book unfurls the circumstances surrounding the 1998 murder of Bishop Juan Gerardi after he presented a report on civil rights abuses committed by the Guatemalan military during the 1980s civil war. Goldman receives a $1000 prize and an invite to the WOLA (Washington Office on Latin America) Benefit Gala and Human Rights Award in September.
The book was selected from a group of four finalists by a panel of judges including Holly Ackerman, librarian for Latin America and Iberia at Duke University, which cosponsors the award.
