Cedar Rapids Main Library Closed for Year; Temporary Space Awaits

Lynn Blumenstein -- Library Journal, 7/14/2008

  • Children's collection survives
  • Wish list of materials coming
  • For now, monetary donations sought

The main library of the Cedar Rapids Public Library (CRPL), IA, severely damaged by flooding in June, will be closed for one year. According to local news reports, CRPL is planning to rent a former Big Lots store, where it will move undamaged and checked-out materials.

The second floor children’s collection is free of mold or “other harmful agents,” according to the CRPL web site, but the adult collection on the first floor is likely unsalvageable. The web site offers a gallery of photos of the flood damage and recovery.

CRPL reported that all outstanding undamaged materials should be returned to the West Side Branch, at established book drops, or at neighboring libraries in Marion and Hiawatha; fines are waived.

Eventually, CRPL will post a wish list of titles on its web site, from which individuals can select one to donate. For now, monetary donations are being accepted by the CRPL Foundation, 500 First Street SE, Cedar Rapids, IA, 52401.
