Book News: Nebula and Triangle Awards Presented

  • Chabon’s Yiddish Policemen’s Union named best novel
  • Michael Moorcock named the Damon Knight Grand Master
  • Peter Cameron and Ali Leibegott win for LGBT Fiction

The book awards season is in full swing, and the annual ceremonies for both the Nebula Awards honoring the best in science fiction and fantasy and the Triangle Awards for top gay and lesbian writing recently were held. Sponsored by the Science Fiction & Fantasy Writers of America, Inc., the Nebulas were presented April 26 in Austin, TX. The winners are:

Novel: The Yiddish Policemen’s Union by Michael Chabon (HarperCollins)
Novella: “Fountain of Age” by Nancy Kress (Asimov’s, July 2007)
Novelette: “The Merchant and the Alchemist’s Gate” by Ted Chiang (The Magazine of Fantasy & Science Fiction, September 2007)
Short Story: “Always” by Karen Joy Fowler (Asimov’s, May 2007)
Scripts: Pan's Labyrinth by Guillermo del Toro
Andre Norton Award: Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows by J.K. Rowling (Scholastic)

In addition, Michael Moorcock was named the Damon Knight Grand Master, Ardath Mayhar was honored as Author Emeritus, and Melisa Michaels and Graham P. Collins were given 2008 SFWA Service Awards.

Triangle Awards

The Publishing Triangle also presented its annual prizes for the best in gay and lesbian writing. This year’s crop of winners are:

Thom Gunn Poetry Award for Gay Poetry: Steve Fellner, Blind Date with Cavafy (Marsh Hawk); and Daniel Hall, Under Sleep (Univ. of Chicago)
The Audre Lorde Award for Lesbian Poetry: Joan Larkin, My Body (Hanging Loose)
The Judy Grahn Award for Lesbian Nonfiction: Janet Malcolm, Two Lives: Gertrude and Alice (Yale Univ.)
The Randy Shilts Award for Gay Nonfiction: Michael Rowe, Other Men's Sons (Cormorant Books)
The Edmund White Award for Debut Fiction: Myriam Gurba, author of Dahlia Season (Manic D Pr.)
The Ferro-Grumley Awards for LGBT Fiction: Peter Cameron, Someday This Pain Will Be Useful to You (Frances Foster Books/FSG); and Ali Leibegott, The IHOP Papers (Carroll & Graf)
The Bill Whitehead Award for Lifetime Achievement: Katherine V. Forrest
