InfoTech: ProQuest Historical Newspapers Adds Irish Publications

Josh Hadro -- Library Journal, 2/4/2008 7:05:00 AM

  • Irish Times and the Weekly Irish Times added
  • Irish Times will be available from 1859-2007
  • Entire run of the Weekly Irish Times from 1865 to 1950 included

ProQuest has expanded its international coverage by adding the Irish Times and the Weekly Irish Times to its Historical Newspapers collection. The Irish Times will be available from 1859-2007, and the entire run of the Weekly Irish Times from 1865 to 1950 will also be included.

The Dublin-based Irish Times was the first newspaper in either Britain or Ireland to go online in 1996 with basic text and graphics, and is now among the first Irish titles added to the ProQuest periodical catalog. The move was touted by the company as a means to make available to researchers a uniquely Irish perspective concerning pivotal international events. “Researchers will be able to compare news, political cartoons, and editorials about the same events in Irish, U.S., and British newspapers,” the company said.
