Minneapolis-Hennepin Library Merger Finally Is Complete

Norman Oder -- Library Journal, 1/4/2008

  • Minneapolis PL consolidated into Hennepin County Library
  • Merger reopens three closed branches
  • Amy Ryan remains director

The Minneapolis Public Library (MPL) has been consolidated into the suburban Hennepin County Library (HCL), and the grand opening was celebrated January 2 at the central library in Minneapolis. The city, which was the only one in the state to have a mostly elected library board, will have only three seats on the new HCL board.

The merger allowed for the reopening of three small branches that had been closed by MPL. Amy Ryan remains as director of HCL; former MPL director Kit Hadley had been recommended for the job of Hennepin County deputy administrator but withdrew after some county officials were uncomfortable with her supervising Ryan. The consolidated system has a collection of more than 5 million materials and serves more than one million people via 41 libraries.
