Brown Mounts Military Art
By Staff -- Library Journal, 7/15/2007
Brown University has created a digital archive of more than 6200 artworks gleaned from its noted Anne S.K. Brown Military Collection. According to the university, this initial digitization is the first part of an “ambitious, multiyear endeavor that will digitize 15,000 individual works in the collection.” The archive offers a wide array of portraits, caricatures, and posters documenting all aspects of military and naval history and uniforms.
Ranging from the 16th century through World War II, the artworks include prints, drawings, watercolors, paintings, and photos. The collection was assembled over a period of four decades and includes roughly 14,000 books; 18,000 sketchbooks, scrapbooks, and portfolios; more than 15,000 individual prints, drawings, and watercolors; and 6000 miniature lead soldiers.
