Stephanie Sterling Brasley has been appointed Manager, Information Literacy Initiatives for the 23-campus California State University system. Formerly, she coordinated the information literacy efforts at the undergraduate College Library, University of California, Los Angeles.

Karen Orr Fritts has joined the staff of the Sampson-Livermore Library, University of North Carolina at Pembroke, as Government Documents/Development Librarian. Previously, she was Government Documents Librarian, Fayetteville State University’s Charles W. Chesnutt Library, NC.

Bernadette Howard recently retired as Assistant Director, Brownell Library, Essex Junction, VT. She joined the staff in 1990 as a Youth Librarian.

Tracy Hull has been appointed Associate Dean of the Mary Couts Burnett Library, Texas Christian University, Fort Worth. She most recently was Department Head of Information Services at Drexel University Library, Philadelphia.

Carolyn Johnson, Head of the Porterville Public Library, CA, has retired after 35 years of service.

Madeleine Lefebvre will become Chief Librarian, Ryerson University, Toronto, in the fall. Currently, she is University Librarian, St. Mary’s University, Halifax, NS, where she has worked since 1999. She was President of the Canadian Library Association, 2003–04.

Carol Lingman, Director of the Sterling Heights Public Library (SHPL), MI, since 1991, has retired after a 22-year career at SHPL. She is replaced by Tammy Turgeon, who was Director of the Suburban Library Cooperative, Clinton Township, MI.

Dottie Morales, 17-year veteran of the Camden Public Library, ME, has retired. She began her career there as a Circulation Librarian and most recently was Assistant Director.

Martha Pollack, Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science at the University of Michigan (UM), Ann Arbor, has been named dean of the UM School of Information, effective August 1, pending approval by the Board of Regents. She earned doctorates in computer science (1984) and information science (1986) from the University of Pennsylvania.

Mac Reed, Government Documents Librarian at the Forsyth Library, Fort Hays State University (FHSU), Hays, KS, retired June 1. His career at FHSU spanned 41 years, having begun as a student worker. His position is being revamped to include digital projects.

Robert Schnabel will become the next Dean, Indiana University (IU) School of Informatics, pending approval by IU trustees. Schnabel currently is Vice Provost/Associate Vice Chancellor for Academic and Campus Technology and Professor of Computer Science, University of Colorado at Boulder, where he has spent the last 30 years. He succeeds J. Michael Dunn at IU, who will retire June 30.

Betty Waznis has been appointed Assistant Director of the San Diego County Library (SDCL). Waznis has been with SDPL since 1988, most recently as Acting Assistant Director.

Nolan Yelich, Librarian of Virginia, will retire on June 30. Yelich joined the state library staff in 1973 and was appointed State Librarian in 1995.

Obituary

Barbara Campbell, former County Librarian (1973–85) at the Santa Clara County Library, Los Gatos, CA, died recently at the age of 78. She was a past president of the California Association of Library Trustees and Commissioners and a lifetime member of the American Library Association and the California Library Association.
