San Antonio PL Selects 3M RFID

By Michael Rogers -- Library Journal, 6/15/2007

The San Antonio Public Library (SAPL) has contracted with 3M for the installation of an RFID system in its Central Library and 23 branches. According to 3M, “the installation will include SelfCheck systems [to let] customers perform most checkouts, returns, and renewals, including fines and fee payments, without the aid of staff…other components will facilitate faster and more efficient circulation and inventory.”

A total of 60 SelfCheck units will be placed in the SAPL system, starting with the Central Library and eight other facilities, with the project to be implemented in three phases, ending in 2008. The installation launches this summer with tags being affixed to the library’s print and electronic circulation items. This will be among the largest U.S. RFID installations.
