Dorothy Allison/Jim Grimsley First Mid-Career Winners

-- Library Journal, 5/16/2007

Dorothy Allison and Jim Grimsley are the inaugural winners of the Outstanding Mid-Career Novelists Prize. The $5000 award was established by Jim Duggins, Ph.D., a retired San Francisco State University professor, to "reward, recognize and promote LGBT mid-career novelists of extraordinary talent and service to the community." Duggins will fund the prizes during his lifetime and has established an endowment that will enable the Horizons Foundation of San Francisco to continue giving the awards thereafter. Grimsley is the author of the novels Dream Boy, Boulevard, and Winter Birds. As a playwright, he is perhaps best known for Mr. Universe. Allison's often controversial works include Bastard Out of Carolina, Trash, Cavedweller, and Skin: Talking About Sex, Class, and Literature.
