For Future Reference

By Mirela Roncevic -- Library Journal, 5/1/2007

Academic Press (now part of Elsevier) has just released the second edition of its highly praised and award-winning Encyclopedia of Stress (3000p. ISBN 978-0-12088503-9. $1195), which was first published in three volumes five years ago and has now grown to four. Covering every imaginable aspect of stress (both theoretical and practical), the work has been expanded significantly to reflect the amount of research generated since the publication of the first edition, resulting in 30 percent new material overall and over 140 new entries. George Fink, a neuroendocrinologist and neuropharmacologist who has devoted his medical career to the research and understanding of stress, is back on board as editor-in-chief, along with contributors from over 30 countries, who help bring the necessary global perspective.

New to this edition are timely updates on such topics as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), which takes into account recent acts of terrorism worldwide, and more thorough coverage of topics like anxiety and depression, animal studies, autoimmune diseases such as multiple sclerosis, genetic factors that play a role in our susceptability to stress, and much more. The resource is also available online through Elsevier's ScienceDirect, featuring countless browsing and searching options and 30-day free trials for institutions. More information about the online version is available at www.info.sciencedirect.com.
