New York Times Librarian Awards

The 2006 New York Times Librarian Awards have been announced, and the six-year-old program has inaugurated a sibling effort to honor three academic librarians. The 22 public librarian winners (down from 27 last year) and three academic librarians each received $2500 and a commemorative plaque at an awards ceremony at the Times December 13. The winners, who were selected by a committee of library luminaries, were grouped by city, state, and region, with an emphasis on the Times’s home territory.

New York State: Robin Osborne, Westchester Library System; Maria Buhl, Guilderland PL

New York Public Library: Gesille James, Allerton Branch, Bronx

Queens Borough Public Library: Jillian O’Shea, Fresh Meadows Branch

Brooklyn Public Library: Anthony Loum, Central Library

New Jersey: Virginia Baeckler, Plainsboro PL; Anita Kramer, Lake Hiawatha Library, Parsippany-Troy Hills; Roz Pelcyger, Glen Rock PL

Connecticut: Linda Fox, Chester Library; Kate McClelland, Perrot Memorial Library, Old Greenwich

Northeast: Stuart Parsons, Sandwich Public Library, MA; Cynthia Richey, Mt. Lebanon PL, PA

Midwest and Great Lakes: Dana Bjerke, Hennepin County Library, Ridgedale Library, MN; Larry Frank, Knox County Library System, Knoxville, TN

Mountain and Plains States: Susan Lura, Norman PL, OK; Janine Rose, Garfield County PL System, Silt Branch, CO

West: Peter Mann, Los Angeles PL, Van Nuys Branch; Cynthia Harrison, Kitsap Regional Library, Bainbridge Island Library, WA

Southwest: Stephanie Neely, Austin PL, TX; Carol Finch, Burton Barr Phoenix PL

Southeast: Melissa Kraemer Hymel, Pointe Coupee Parish PL, New Roads Branch, LA; Nancy Tillinghast, Thomas County PL, Thomasville, GA

Academic Librarian Winners: Jennifer Duvernay, Arizona State University Libraries, Tempe; Paul Owen Jenkins, Archbishop Alter Library, College of Mount St. Joseph, Cincinnati; Myrna J. McCallister, Indiana State University Library, Terre Haute.
