Libraries in Indiana, North Carolina, and Texas are the 2006 library recipients of the National Awards for Museum and Library Service. Each library will receive $10,000 and will be honored at a special ceremony in Washington, DC. The Frankfort Community Public Library, IN, was recognized for sponsoring “a 'school of living' and myriad free and low-cost fine art, crafts, music, theater, cooking, and gardening classes for children and adults,” turning the library into a cultural hub.
The Public Library of Charlotte and Mecklenburg County, NC, was cited for its broad outreach efforts, including 18 web sites and the new ImaginOn Center in partnership with the local children’s theater. The San Antonio Public Library was acknowledged for efforts to reach “the cultural mosaic of the San Antonio community,” especially “among the hard-to-reach low-income Spanish-speaking population.”
