Library Buildings 2006: Betwixt and Be Teen

A wrap-up of 160 public library projects and 29 academic buildings

By Bette-Lee Fox -- Library Journal, 12/15/2006

What a miraculous period librarianship has experienced. From nature’s power to destroy (“A Storm Rains on Our Parade,” LJ 12/05, p. 44) to humankind’s spirit to rebuild (Library by Design, LJ 9/15/06), library construction has seen it all this year. At 29, the number of academic library facilities completed between July 1, 2005, and June 30, 2006, is on a par with recent statistics. However, the number of public library projects, at 160, is comparatively low. Hurricane-damaged libraries not yet in operation and low levels of voter support for capital campaigns (see “The Good Fight: Library Referenda 2004,” LJ 3/15/05, p. 32) might be contributing factors.

Still, the construction reported here is robust, with several huge new buildings (the main facility of the Jacksonville PL, FL, at $101.7 million; Santa Monica PL, CA, main and system headquarters, $57 million; and Des Moines PL, $32 million) leading the way. And no group stands to gain more from this year’s boom than young adults, as 61 percent of all projects (almost equal at 81 new structures and 79 addition/renovation efforts) include a teen space. It’s a sound plan: reach future library users now, and give them a dedicated area to call their own.

Doing more with more?

Among the 160 projects are several that combine functions with other agencies or organizations. A branch of Seattle PL cohabits with a neighborhood service center; a California branch studies with the school district; the Victoria Gardens Library, Rancho Cucamonga, CA, goes big time with a cultural and conference center and a theater; the Central Point Branch, OR, networks with city offices; and then there is the ImaginOn center of Charlotte & Mecklenburg County Library, NC, where a children’s library cuddles with a children’s theater. In addition, the Ocean County Library, Toms River, NJ, perked up its space with a new café.

College and university buildings cover the map, with renovation projects totaling an even dozen. The M.D. Anderson Library at the University of Houston, TX, is the largest addition/renovation, costing $54.8 million, and the Frank P. Doyle Library at Santa Rosa Junior College, CA, weighs in as the most expensive new facility, at $46 million.

Making noise in New Orleans

One restoration project dear to our hearts is the Alvar Street Branch of the New Orleans PL, covered in the fall Library by Design. Though money was an object, teams of architects, publishers, and vendors, coordinated by LJ, rolled up their sleeves to rebuild the library and see how the spirit of a city can indeed live in its libraries.

We’ve hit a new high with expenditures this year, as the public library initiatives cost over $905 million. Let’s see what a change in the political climate, plus an abundance of sunny skies, will do to the architectural forecast. It’s always library weather.
