Filter Opposition Fodder for Attack Ad

Montana U.S. Senate candidate Jon Tester, a Democrat, voted in 2001 against a state law requiring libraries to install Internet filters—and now he's facing a Montana Republican Party attack ad that claims he's "so extreme he can't be trusted to vote to protect Montana." (A federal law had been passed a year earlier.) Curiously, not only did the state librarian, the Montana Library Association, and other civic groups oppose the law, but so did 18 Republican state senators. The Helena Independent Record asked Chuck Denowh, executive director of the state Republican Party, whether those Republican opponents were equally extreme, and his response was a dodge: "From our perspective, this is just about Jon Tester."
