In Florida, a Library Park Emerges

-- Library Journal, 8/18/2006

The new Weston Branch Library of the Broward County Libraries, FL, opened in February, including a 30,000 square foot library plus 20,000 square feet of offices and classrooms for Broward Community College. Now Weston has a $200,000 state grant for a future $1.5 million Library Park on a 5.8-acre site south of the library. The park should be completed next year. City Manager John Flint told the Sun-Sentinel, "It is unique, and meant to complement the library and be geared for reading and studying activities outdoors." The park is planned to have benches, lighting, and walkways/exercise paths. "We are making an outdoor extension of the library," Skidmore said. "We are looking at adding literary features, identifying plaques or markers featuring information on various artists." At the main entrance of the plaza, a fountain will be built to look like an open stack of books.
