-- Library Journal, 08/01/2006

Numerous libraries in the central parts of New York State were damaged by floods in June, and the New York Library Association (NYLA) is collecting financial donations for them. The donated funds will be distributed proportionally to libraries in the Southern Tier, Mohawk Valley, and Mid-Hudson Valley. "The Council and members of [NYLA] contributed funds last year to help libraries impacted by Hurricane Katrina. This year we need to help libraries in our own backyard," said Michael Borges, NYLA executive director. NYLA and the State Library will work with public library systems in the impacted regions to coordinate donations of books and other materials lost in the flooding. However, the donated funds will go to repair buildings and replace equipment.
