By Bette-Lee Fox -- Library Journal, 09/01/2005

The statistics haven't changed and the glamour might have paled (though having Melissa Etheridge and Kylie Minogue among the sisterhood couldn't hurt), but breast cancer is still the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths among U.S. women. As Breast Cancer Awareness Month (October) approaches, libraries should consider the following titles, especially the fourth edition of Susan Love's classic tome.

Better Homes and Gardens® New Cook Book: Limited Edition "Pink Plaid." 12th ed. Better Homes and Gardens: Meredith. Sept. 2005. 640p. illus. index. ringbound. ISBN 0-696-22732-0. $29.95. COOKERY

In addition to 1200 recipes and 700 full-color photos, this limited edition contains a special "Pink" section featuring recommendations to lower cancer risk through healthy eating, information on "superfoods"—e.g., cranberries, broccoli, apricots—and 60 related recipes.

Conley, Edward J., M.D. The Breast Cancer Prevention Plan: 20 Proven Steps for Reducing Your Breast Cancer Risk. McGraw-Hill. Oct. 2005. 192p. index. ISBN 0-07-146387-9. pap. $14.95. Horner,
Christine, M.D.
Waking the Warrior Goddess: Dr. Christine Horner's Program To Protect Against & Fight Breast Cancer. Basic Health. 2005. 310p. index. ISBN 1-59120-155-1. $24.95. HEALTH

Conley, assistant clinical professor of medicine at Michigan State University, reveals "secrets" that may "lower your breast cancer risk by 90% or more." He discusses estrogen and its role in the disease as well as nutrients and antitoxins. Though most of Conley's suggestions—e.g., get more rest, eat more fruits and vegetables—certainly can't hurt, the secretive nature and tone of the presentation are off-putting. For inclusive collections.Surgeon Horner considers natural foods and relaxation as a means for women "to influence [their] state of health more than [they] ever imagined." Thinking organic and avoiding toxins are basic to her approach for empowerment. Appropriate for alternative/complementary health collections.

Gafni, Ramy. Ramy Gafni's Beauty Therapy: The Ultimate Guide to Looking and Feeling Great While Living with Cancer. M. Evans. Sept. 2005. 138p. illus. bibliog. index. ISBN 1-59077-066-8. $24.95. HEALTH

Concerns over chemotherapy take many forms, but loss of hair and changes in complexion rank way up there. Gafni, a professional makeup artist, offers tips for women, men, and teens on reviving skin quality and dealing with lost eyebrows and scalp that is dry as well as bald. His advice also covers radiation-induced skin problems. People without cancer will probably learn a thing or two. For all collections.

Katan, Tania. My One-Night Stand with Cancer: A Memoir. Alyson, dist. by Consortium. Sept. 2005. 286p. ISBN 1-55583-890-1 [ISBN 978-1-55583-890-4]. pap. $15.95. BIOG

Playwright and author Katan is a celebrity at her breast clinic because at age 30 she is undergoing her second bout with breast cancer. This candid memoir moves back and forth between right breast (1992) and left breast (2002) and reveals Katan's life as a young Jewish lesbian. And quite a life it is. This raw, raunchy, reflective, and riotously funny book is a must for gay/lesbian collections. Any woman who has been diagnosed will recognize Katan as the "real deal." Highly recommended for public and academic libraries.

Lerner, Paula (photogs.) & John Yow (text). Why We Walk: The Inspirational Journey Toward a Cure for Breast Cancer. Rutledge Hill. Sept. 2005. 161p. ed. by Deb Murphy. photogs. ISBN 1-4016-0220-7. $29.99. HEALTH

The line of participants stretching for miles in a cancer fundraising walk is usually inspiration enough. But here, editor Murphy culls profiles of a number of these foot soldiers (literally) in the struggle to raise money for and awareness of breast cancer, many of whom are survivors themselves. For all libraries.

Love, Susan M., M.D. with Karen Lindsey. Dr. Susan Love's Breast Book. 4th rev. ed. Merloyd Lawrence: Da Capo Lifelong. Oct. 2005. c.600p. illus. index. ISBN 0-7382-0973-2. pap. $22. HEALTH

The book that brought breast health out of the closet is back with a bang. This fourth edition includes preventive steps for gene carriers, future diagnostic blood tests for breast cancer, new aromatase inhibitor therapy, updated information on LCIS, and more. No library should be without this work.

Michael, Jan. Flying Crooked: A Story of Accepting Cancer. Greystone, dist. by Publishers Group West. Sept. 2005. 121p. ISBN 1-55365-130-8. [ISBN 978-1-55365-130-7]. $17.95. HEALTH

Yorkshire-born writer and literary agent Michael shares her experience of breast cancer in this sweet memoir. She wasn't always optimistic ("Oh, cancerchondria still hit all right"), but she maintained her perspective, especially when her ex-lover lost his over his own cancer diagnosis. For public libraries.

Peltosaari, Leila. Dancing with Fear: Tips and Wisdom from Breast Cancer Survivors. Tikka, dist. by Quality Bks. Sept. 2005. 223p. bibliog. index. ISBN 1-896106-05-6. pap. $14.95. HEALTH

Breast cancer survivor Peltosaari combines factoids and informational sidebars with comments and memories from 125 women with breast cancer. Accessible and easy to use; for comprehensive collections.

Ricks, Delthia. Breast Cancer Basics and Beyond: Treatments, Resources, Self-Help, Good News, Updates. Hunter House, dist. by Publishers Group West. Oct. 2005. 384p. illus. index. ISBN 0-89793-454-7 [ISBN 978-0-89793-454-1]. pap. $14.95. HEALTH

Ricks, senior medical writer at New York's Newsday, hopes to "cut through the myths, sensationalism, and scare-mongering" associated with breast cancer with this comprehensive guidebook. She considers the newest therapies and those in development and includes sidebars and headings that make finding information easy. Ricks is especially bent on removing the accusatory attitude that women are responsible for their illness. Highly recommended.
