Travelogs & Memoirs
Castro, Ruy. Rio de Janeiro: Carnival Under Fire. Bloomsbury, dist. by St. Martin’s. (The Writer and the City). 2004. 244p. tr., from Portugese, by John Gledson. maps. ISBN 0-7475-7331-X. $16.95.
In his humorous account, Rio native Castro weaves together historical and current events to offer an evocative sense of this dazzling former capital city of Brazil.
Charrière, Henri. Papillon. Perennial: HarperCollins. 2001. 560p. ISBN 0-06-093479-4. pap. $15.95.
Charrière, a Frenchman wrongly convicted and sent to the notorious (and now defunct) prison on Devil’s Island off the coast of French Guiana, recalls his imprisonment and escape.
Waugh, Evelyn. Waugh Abroad: Collected Travel Writing. Everyman’s Library. 2003. 1064p. illus. maps. bibliog. ISBN 1-4000-4076-0. pap. $25.
Some may think twice about visiting any place Waugh writes about in his cheeky travel memoirs. But this compilation, which finds the lively writer in British Guiana and Brazil, always entertains.
Chatwin, Bruce & Paul Theroux (text) & Jeff Gnass (photogs.). Nowhere Is a Place: Travels in Patagonia. Sierra Club Books. 1995. 109p. photogs. bibliog. ISBN 0-87156-359-2. pap. $18.
Combining the prose of two exceptional travel writers with majestic photographs of the area, this op title is worth hunting down.
