Cincinnati/Hamilton County Librarians Unionize

-- Library Journal, 2/7/2006

The Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County January 30 garnered a majority vote (74–65) to unionize, despite resistance from the library administration. The Enquirer of Cincinnati reported that the unionization was spurred by a recent round of budget cuts, which led the library to cut positions and change some staffers to part-time status, leading to the loss of health benefits. Pam Gogulski, an organizer from the Service Employees International Union, which represents numerous Ohio public libraries, asserted that additional cuts were looming. "When they have a voice, it will be much better for the community," Gogulski told the Enquirer. The unionization effort began last year.
