Library Best Sellers 2005

A year of the books most borrowed in U.S. libraries

By Rebecca Miller -- Library Journal, 12/15/2005

It wasn't all The Da Vinci Code in libraries this year. LJ's fiction list shows how responsive librarians are to patron demand. Pop titles pop right away, ride the list up, and most often ride back down to get replaced by the next big thing. But library book clubs and insightful readers' advisory keep many books alive well past their first printings. While John Grisham's The Broker was hot, it barely outpaced not only Dan Brown's Da Vinci but Khaled Hosseini's reading club sensation The Kite Runner. James Patterson ruled this year's borrowed fiction, however, with four titles making the top 20. (The December fiction and nonfiction best circulators are on p. 196.)

The long tail

Longevity is the name of the game in nonfiction. Word of mouth and topical interest inform the wide range of nonfiction titles that peaked—from celebrity tell-alls and fad diets to serious political works and humor. Many move well in libraries long after bookstores are on to the next season. Two stellar examples are Azar Nafisi's Reading Lolita in Tehran and Lynne Truss's Eats, Shoots & Leaves, both alums of the inaugural best sellers list in June 2004 that thrived well into 2005 in libraries in both paperback and hardcover. Malcolm Gladwell's Blink took the top spot for nonfiction, with 17 turns on the list, many in the top ten. Readers' thirst for more Gladwell brought his 2000 best seller, The Tipping Point, roaring onto the list for eight showings.

On the Move for 2006

We expect the following books (in no particular order) to be big circulators in 2006—we won't even mention James Frey's A Million Little Pieces (Nan A. Talese: Doubleday), which boomed to the top of the list as soon as Oprah picked it.

FICTION

Edward P. Jones's The Known World (Amistad) might have been published in 2004, but the Pulitzer is keeping it on folks' lips, as is a recent touting of the paperback on the Today Show.

James Patterson is expected to hit the list again with Mary, Mary (Little, Brown), the follow-up to London Bridges.

Candace Bushnell's Lipstick Jungle (Hyperion) is a shoe-in for library book clubs; we're just wondering exactly what shoes to wear to talk about it.

NONFICTION

Joan Didion's The Year of Magical Thinking (Knopf) hasn't made LJ's list yet, but its National Book Award win, best seller status, and intense subject matter make it a sure bet for reading groups for a long time to come.

Alan Alda's Never Have Your Dog Stuffed (Random) is deep for a celeb bio, and it is climbing our list fast.

J.R. Moehringer's depiction of coming of age in a tavern gives The Tender Bar (Hyperion) staying power.
