Nominations for NY Times Librarian Awards Open

Nominations for the fifth annual New York Times Librarian Awards will be accepted until September 2. The Times will recognize 27 public librarians from across the country who provide outstanding community service on a consistent basis. Nominations come from the general public. In 2004, the newspaper received nearly 2000 nominations from 47 states. Winners will be selected by committee and announced in the Times in November. Each winner will receive $2500 and a commemorative plaque. The selection committee includes:

  • Mary Beth Beidl, assistant director, Nassau Library System
  • Norma Blake, state librarian, New Jersey State Library
  • Michael Borges, executive director, New York Library Association
  • Ginnie Cooper, executive director, Brooklyn Public Library
  • Francine Fialkoff, editor, Library Journal
  • Toni Garvey, city librarian, Phoenix Public Library
  • Tula Giannini, associate professor, acting dean, Pratt Institute, School of Information and Library Science
  • Paula Goings, assistant director of branches, Queens Library
  • Mary Graham, director of neighborhood services, Brooklyn Public Library
  • Fontayne Holmes, assistant city librarian, Los Angeles Public Library
  • Robert Hubsher, director, Ramapo Catskill Library System
  • Bruce Massis, director, Suffolk Cooperative Library System
  • Kathleen Moeller-Peiffer, grants manager/deputy director, New Jersey State Library
  • Kate Nevins, executive director, SOLINET
  • Sara Parker, state librarian, Missouri Secretary of State's Office
  • Amy Small, manager of external relations, Westchester Library System
  • Jackie Thresher, director, Nassau Library System
  • Pat Tumulty, executive director, New Jersey Library Association
  • Michael Tyree, library director, West Bend Community Memorial Library (Wisconsin)
  • James Walther, director, training and development, The New York Public Library
  • Janet Welch, state librarian and assistant commissioner for libraries, The New York State Library
  • Kendall Wiggin, state librarian, Connecticut State Library
