Dynix Gives $16K for ALA-APA Award

Award to highlight salary efforts; ALA-APA funding up slightly

by Norman Oder -- Library Journal, 11/15/2004

The American Library Association-Allied Professional Association (ALA-APA) has received a $16,000 donation from the Dynix Corporation, a significant award for the organization, which has been slow to raise funds. The donation will fund the Dynix-ALA-APA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Salaries and Status for Library Workers.

The prize will be given to an individual, group of individuals, or institution that has made an outstanding contribution to improving the salary and status of library workers in a local, regional, or national setting. The recipient will receive $5000 and be recognized at the ALA-APA Networking Breakfast at the 2005 ALA annual conference in Chicago. Dynix is expected to present $5000 annually to support the award. The Dynix contribution also will support the activities of the Standing Committee on the Salaries and Status of Library Workers, allowing members to participate in state and local conferences.

Giving up slightly

The Dynix funds mean that ALA-APA raised $26,688 in FY03/04. The initial fundraising goal for the year was $48,750 but that was revised at the annual conference to $27,400. ALA-APA director Jenifer Grady said that since mid-April, when ALA-APA had raised $7,388 in individual donations (see News, LJ 5/15/04, p. 17), another $10,688 had been raised from 1,643 contributors.

"In 2005, we will raise the check-off, encouraging members and others to give $5 or a multiple of five. She noted that donors who contribute $25 or more will receive a complimentary copy of the salary advocacy video Working @ Your Library: For Love or Money.
