    The AgeLine database is produced by AARP. It may be accessed freely on its site or through commercial vendors (Ovid, CSA, Dialog, EBSCO). The database consists of over 60,000 abstracts and summaries of books, articles, reports, and videos covering the field of social gerontology and related issues.

  • ACLS History E-Book Project

    The History E-Book Project is the result of a $3 million Mellon Foundation grant to the American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) for an electronic publishing program of scholarly, high-quality history books. The project offers 800 titles, originally published from the 1920s to the present. In 2004 it plans to add 250 titles in African, Asian, and Latin American history. ACLS also publishes new ebooks, with links to related titles in the History E-Book Project.

    Alexander Street Press produces scholarly collections of primary resources, including American Film Scripts Online and North American Immigrant Letters, Diaries, and Oral Histories. It is known for the value-added indexing of its collections. Alexander Street recently announced Oral History Online, with audio, video, and text files. Other titles in the wings are Latino Literature: Poetry, Drama and Fiction and North American Theatre Online. The company won The Charleston Advisor's 2003 Readers' Choice Awards for Best Content and Best Contract Options and received the Choice "Outstanding Academic Title" in January 2004 for Black Drama. North American Immigrant Letters... and Women and Social Movements in the United States, 1600 to 2000, were both named LJ "Best Reference Sources 2003" (LJ 4/15/04).

    American Psychiatric Publishing, Inc. (APPI) publishes the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 4th ed., also known as DSM-IV®. It comes in a PDA format for Palm and Pocket PC, as well as in a CD-ROM. APPI also publishes several journals that are available online via HighWire Press.

    The American Psychological Association's (APA) primary databases, PsycINFO and PsycArticles, are available directly from APA by subscription, as well as on a pay-as-you-go basis. They may also be accessed through several major online vendors. PsycEXTRA is a database for gray literature—research reports, curricula, standards, videos, consumer brochures, etc.—from government agencies, research labs, corporations, societies, organizations, and more. It does not overlap with PsycINFO. A collection of electronic books will be introduced later this year.

    BioMed Central is an independent publisher that subscribes to the open access model. It publishes over 100 peer-reviewed online biomedical research journals. Articles are covered by PubMed and archived in PubMed Central. BioMed Central also publishes Faculty of 1000, a service that highlights the top papers in biology based upon the recommendations of over 1000 scientists.

    The BioOne collection contains over 200 ebulletins and ejournals published by members of the American Institute of Biological Societies and others. Articles are available in HTML or PDF format. BioOne Abstracts and Indexes Database, with a thesaurus, is now available through CSA. It provides links to full text in BioOne and is free to BioOne subscribers. It features links to text and the ability to save searches and perform SDI alerts.

    Books24x7 offers over 4200 full-text ebooks in four suites: BusinessPro, FinancePro, ITPro, and OfficeEssentials. Topics covered include accounting, consolidation and mergers, desktop and office applications, e-commerce, programming, and more. Publishers range from Microsoft to Wiley to MIT. Libraries can incorporate MARC records with links to full text, or users can search via the Books24x7 Referenceware platform. The resource is growing rapidly; in 2003 over 1600 ebooks were added.

    Bowker's Books in Print (BIP) and Global BIP are now Z39.50 compliant for cross-database searches. The Spanish BIP also is now available. Library consortia reports have been added to Ulrich's Serials Analysis System. A web site to support librarians using Bowker products was announced in late 2003 (www.bowkersupport.com). Bowker also reintroduced Bookwire, a portal about the book industry. Recently, Bowker launched PatronBooksInPrint.com, a user-friendly interface to BIP.

    CABI's primary database product is CAB Abstracts, one of the singular databases for agriculture. It is available through several platforms: Ovid, ISI, EBSCO, Dialog, DIMDI, STN, BIDS, and CAB Direct. CAB Direct includes CAB Abstracts and CAB Global Health. Several database subsets are also available. Other resources available via the Internet or CD-ROM are Animal Health and Production Compendium, Crop Protection Compendium, and Forestry Compendium. Through an agreement with the Department of Agriculture, these compendia will be disseminated to research and extension faculties of Land Grant Universities who are working on projects associated with homeland security.
  • CAS (Chemical Abstracts Service)

    CAS continues to be the leader in chemical information. Over 810,000 document abstracts were added to CAS databases during the past year, while 1.8 million substance records were added to the CAS Registry File. In the summer of 2003, CAS introduced Science IP to provide on-demand intellectual property search services. CAS and ACS Publications have entered an agreement with Elsevier to link directly among their products and services. SciFinder has been enhanced with new capabilities for chemical exploration and analysis. New versions of SciFinder Scholar and STN Express were also introduced.

    CISTI is known for its document delivery service. Subscribers may use the CISTI Source Articles database that consists of articles from 20,000 journals in several subject areas. They may also create article and table of contents alerts. CISTI has introduced Secure Desktop Delivery (SDD) for sending documents electronically to users. A key component to SDD is a customized plug-in that works with the Acrobat Reader to prevent redistribution of documents supplied by this service. CISTI also publishes NRC Research Press ejournals. They are available through Ingenta and EBSCO Academic Search Premier.

    The Classical Music Library is a streaming music service for libraries. It has a growing collection of 20,000 tracks of music. Approximately 2000 tracks are added monthly. It comes with program notes, images, playlists, and biographies, including links to H.W. Wilson databases. Users may listen to music on computers in the library or remotely.

    Columbia University Press's electronic book product, Gutenberg-e, offers sets of books, six titles per set, in history and anthropology. Institutions receive perpetual access along with unlimited, remote access. Each set is enhanced with supplemental materials. Other online offerings include Columbia Earthscape, Columbia Electronic Encyclopedia, Columbia Gazetteer of the World Online, Columbia Granger's World on Poetry Online, Columbia Guide to Digital Publishing, and Columbia International Affairs Online.

    The CQ Electronic Library, a tool for both students and researchers, consists of several CQ products: CQ Researcher, CQ Weekly, CQ Insider, CQ Encyclopedia of American Government, CQ Congress Collection, CQ Supreme Court Collection, CQ Public Affairs Collection, and CQ Voting and Elections Collection. Its new interface features a citation builder and personal profiles for users to save searches. Subscribers to the CQ Electronic Library now have the ability to search in two or more of the services at a time in the advanced search mode. The Spanish-language CQ Researcher is now available.

    Last year Taylor & Francis bought CRC Press to increase its offerings in the science and technology market. CRC continues to publish books, journals, and online information products in several subject areas, including chemistry, engineering, environment, food technology, and information technology. CRC Handbook of Chemistry and Physics, the flagship publication, is available in print and online versions. Several databases are available via the CRCnetBASE product line, including ATSDR, CHEMnetBASE, and ENGnetBASE. New titles are planned for biotechnology, polymers, and pharmaceuticals.

    CSA has expanded its social science and humanities offerings. Communication Abstracts from SAGE publications is now online, and new full-text SAGE collections in education and psychology are planned for release in 2004. Design and Applied Arts Index and International Bibliography of the Social Sciences are now available through CSA, and there are plans to add FRANCIS (humanities and sciences) from the Institut de l'Information Scientifique et Technique du Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique and Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals. CSA introduced a new database called CSA Technology Research Database, consisting of three subfiles: CSA Materials Research Database with METADEX, CSA High Technology Research Database with Aerospace, and CSA Engineering Research Database. It covers serial and nonserial sources with back files to 1962. CSA-produced databases now have forward and backward linking. At the end of 2003, all CSA databases were removed from the Ovid/SilverPlatter platform.

    The primary D&B database is the Million Dollar Database for U.S. and Canadian businesses and for international businesses. Last year, D&B acquired Hoover's Online. Four subscription options are now available to Hoover's. The free web site for Hoover's Online has been redesigned and has links to fee-based information.
  • Marcel Dekker, Inc.

    Marcel Dekker is known for its publications in chemistry, medicine, and engineering. Many of its book titles are now available electronically in Dekker eBooks. It also has several online encyclopedias, including the Encyclopedia of Plant and Crop Science, Encyclopedia of Nanoscience and Nanotechnology, Encyclopedia of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering, and Encyclopedia of Supramolecular Chemistry. Libraries may opt to obtain the encyclopedias with a one-time, up-front life-of-the-edition price. At the end of 2003 Taylor & Francis bought Marcel Dekker to increase its offerings in the science and technology market.

    Dialog announced new fixed-price options for access to some databases. Its Company Profiles service has additional reference material from Thomson Gale and an improved search interface. The Dialog Portals news service was introduced last fall, integrating Dialog news services with enterprise portals from nine different portal software vendors. DialogPRO NewsEdge was launched in early 2004. Designed for small-business owners and managers, it provides news from wire services, newspapers, magazines, and journals as well as reports and data from the government and research analysts.
  • Ebrary, Inc.

The firm provides several databases, with 35,000 titles of ebooks, in general and academic subject areas. Ebrary created a collection for public libraries, Public Library Complete, comprised of eight databases of over 5400 titles and a collection of over 1000 maps. Its signature product, Academic Library Complete, provides over 14,500 titles. It also makes available six databases from various publishers
  • EBSCO Publishing

    EBSCO has developed its own OpenURL-compliant link resolver called Link Source. Its reference linking provides the ability to link directly to articles found in bibliographies that cite that article. EBSCO acquired CINAHL at the end of 2003. It is adding audio and video to the History Reference Center. A new Library Center provides research material, industry news, and information related to librarianship and related fields. The International Bibliography of Theatre was recently added to its offerings, as well as Art Index Retrospective from H.W. Wilson. BookSource Nonfiction is an integrated and aggregated research database offering 1660-plus popular nonfiction books and series for public and school libraries.

    Elsevier's ScienceDirect interface provides access to ejournals, ebooks, electronic reference works, and databases from Elsevier. Over 5.5 million articles are available in ScienceDirect, and the back file program continues to add content. In January the company launched its ebook series, with the first titles available in the social sciences. ScienceDirect use reports are now compliant with COUNTER. At the end of 2004, Elsevier will inaugurate Scopus, a new navigation server for STM information. Engineering Information has added the NTIS database to its offerings.
  • Factiva, a Dow Jones & Reuters Company

    A new interface for factiva.com, launched in March, is more streamlined. New subscription options are available for individuals and small businesses needing occasional search services. Factiva was the winner of two 2003 Codie Awards for the product factiva.com. Factiva Search is now available through MS Office 2003 applications. The Membership Circle service provides enhanced customer learning opportunities and account management tools in several languages. Factiva is currently codeveloping a text analytics product with IBM.

    Facts On File provides the school library market with databases in many subject areas. Its new offering, American History Online, is based on Facts On File's 11-volume Encyclopedia of American History and Landmark Documents in American History updated through 2003. It includes biographies, images, maps, charts, and web links. Other databases cover career guidance, health and medicine, history, multicultural studies, and science and technology.

Facts for Learning is now available for two groups: grades two through five and five through eight. It includes material from Weekly Reader and Gareth Stevens, Inc., and has homework resources and learning activities.

    Greenwood Electronic Media produces online sourcebooks, enhanced versions of print titles, and supplementary resources primarily for the school library market. The newest sourcebook, Greenwood Daily Life Online: Exploring Daily Life Past and Present, is scheduled for release in mid-2004. It is based upon The Greenwood Encyclopedia of Daily Life and the "Daily Life Through History" series. New content is to be added annually. Lesson plans are also included. Other online products include Literature in Context and American Slavery: A Composite Biography.

    Grey House publishes online and CD-ROM directories in business, statistics, demographics, health, and education. Its first, and longest-running, annual publication is the Directory of Mail Order Catalogs.
  • HarpWeek

    HarpWeek provides the full text of Harper's Weekly from 1857 to 1912. The interface has been redesigned with many new features. Pages are now in PDF files, and the full text is searchable and appears alongside a page image. Output can be sorted by relevance ranking, date, or alphabetically. One may now view tables of contents and search literary synopses. HarpWeek continues to create free sites of special interest to educators, including one on the presidential elections from 1860 to 1912.

    HighWire Press hosts over 350 journals, with nearly 200 titles with free back files. It recently introduced an open package option, an alternative to the Big Deal, to allow libraries to choose specific journals of interest. HighWire states that it provides access to the world's largest collection of free, full-text journals in the life sciences. It has redesigned its web site, added Medline, with links to 354 full-text HighWire journals and alerts from Medline/HighWire titles.
  • IEEE (Institute of Electrical & Electronics Engineers)

    All of IEEE's periodicals, conference proceedings, and standards can be found in the IEEE/IEE Electronic Library (IEL) and are accessed by the IEEE Xplore interface. IEEE has been working on partnerships to increase access to its publications. At the end of 2003 there was a major upgrade to the IEEE Xplore interface with Verity K2 search software. Along with improved searching, the upgrade included email alerts, highlighted search terms, reference links, and forward links to citing IEEE documents. Legacy data from back to 1950 has been added. In 2004 the content from selected journals will be available online from cover to cover (table of contents, letters, etc.).

    The InfoSci-Online database is a collection of full-text publications from Idea Group on research and trends in information science, technology, and management. It is made up of over 350 journal articles, 2700 book chapters, 200 studies, and over 750 conference papers. The database is available directly through Idea Group, as well as through EBSCO.
  • Infotrieve

    Infotrieve has put together one of the largest collections of journal article content. In addition to its document delivery service (which delivers articles and reports via fax, mail, courier, and electronic means), Infotrieve supports several databases. Its Table of Contents database, with the contents of over 20,000 journals, is free. Publist is an online directory of over 150,000 publications, journals, and periodicals used by academic and research institutions. It additionally has its own version of Medline. Infotrieve also supports the Ariel software, acquired from RLG, which facilitates document delivery across the Internet.

    The primary web-based product of infoUSA is ReferenceUSA, containing data derived from national, state, and specialized phone directories. It includes both business and residential information from the United States and Canada. The company makes 70,000 phone calls per day to verify information on every business in the database. Business information includes NAICS codes and descriptions and links to SEC filings. New business data elements include number of PCs, square footage of facility, owned or leased building indicator, and longitude/latitude.
  • Ingenta, Inc.

    Ingenta provides access to 20,000 publications, including 6000 in full text. Its database of article citations and abstracts may be searched without charge. It also hosts the ejournals of several publishers. A new interface, IngentaConnect, will be introduced this year with improved functionality and navigation. The firm is working on a single alerting service for both electronic and fax titles and now provides libraries with COUNTER-compliant usage statistics. Ingenta was responsible for the design of the web interface for Oxford Scholarship Online.
  • JSTOR

    JSTOR builds multidisciplinary and discipline-specific collections of the back files of almost 400 scholarly journals from over 200 publishers. Over 1900 institutions are subscribers. New collections are Arts & Sciences III (completion in 2005), Arts & Sciences IV (completion in 2006), and Arts & Sciences Complement (completion in 2008). During 2004, the staff will work on a strategy for metasearching of the collections.
  • Kluwer Academic Publishers

    Kluwer Academic offers its 650 journals in science, technology, humanities, and law through its online service, Kluwer Online. A subset of its journals is available electronically through ProQuest. Kluwer publishes several electronic reference titles in the computational and mathematical sciences and earth and environmental sciences, as well as over 600 ebooks. It recently developed an online site for librarians and plans to digitize journal back files this year.
  • Knovel Corporation

    Knovel is known for producing interactive components of technical handbooks targeted at scientists and engineers. Currently, it offers over 500 full-text books (from publishers like ASME, Elsevier, and Wiley) as well as other reference sources. Subject areas include food science, biology and biotechnology, chemistry and chemical engineering, pharamaceuticals, and more. Searching, which can be against the entire database or a subset, is by Boolean operators. Knovel adds about 20 titles per month.
  • LexisNexis Academic & Library Solutions

    The first installment of the U.S. Congressional Serial Set has been released by LexisNexis. It is being digitized in a partnership with Apex Epublishing. The Company Dossier Service, a new addition to the LexisNexis Academic product line, provides in-depth company information. The Media Analyzer and Current Issues products were dropped this past year. LexisNexis is also working with Endeavor and Ex Libris to make their products searchable by federated search engines.

    The Mergent Online database contains information on 15,000 U.S. companies and 20,000 non-U.S.-based corporations in 100 countries. It contains financial statements, debt ratings, lists of officers and directors, subsidiaries, annual reports, news, EDGAR filings, etc. Information is also available on corporate and municipal bonds and dividends. The service was nominated for a 2004 Codie Award in the category for Best Online Business News or Information Service.

    The National Journal Group's Policy Central is a comprehensive suite of online resources in politics, policy, and government. It comprises several individual products of the National Journal Group: National Journal, The Hotline, Congress Daily, Technology Daily, The Almanac of American Politics, and research databases (Market Reports & Bill Status, Ad Spotlight, Poll Track, and more).

  • Nature Publishing Group

    Nature Publishing Group, the scientific publishing division of Macmillan, produces both print and online journals, such as Nature and Nature Reviews, and reference materials in the biological and physical sciences. It has recently formed a partnership with the New York Academy of Sciences to collaborate on several initiatives, including dissemination of information from academy conferences and meetings. Nature Publishing recently released a ten-year archive of Nature.

    The Naxos Music Library provides 75,000 tracks in streamed audio format from 5000 recordings, with liner notes. Content includes the full spectrum of the classical repertoire as well as jazz, New Age, and world music. Naxos is strictly a streaming service, and users cannot download or save the music. The archives of PAIS, back to 1915, will be available online this year. netLibrary announced a new Spanish-language collection.

Ovid LinkSolver is an OpenURL-compliant application. New publisher journal collections will be added in 2004, including Adis International and Thieme Publishing.

    At the end of 2003, Oxford University Press introduced a collection of scholarly ebooks from Oxford's academic publishing group, called Oxford Scholarship Online, consisting of approximately 700 titles in the humanities and social sciences. The collection is enhanced with reference linking and a full range of search options. Launched in December 2003, Oxford Reference Online: Premium Collection enhances the 120-plus books that comprise the Core Collection (reference works in 20 subject areas) with titles from the "Oxford Companion" series. Later in 2004, the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography Online will be released.

Reference Universe now supports the OpenURL protocol and can automatically link to a library catalog. The 19th Century Masterfile, with over 50 indexes online, contains links to full text and continues to be updated.

Search history can be viewed and manipulated, and users can get email alerts about new issues. Self-generated use stats were implemented in 2003. In January 2004, Project MUSE management sponsored public hearings on new pricing models.

    ProQuest implemented a new interface to its major products, called PQNext. One of the most useful new features is a bibliographic citation tool that generates a citation for a record in the format of one's choice (APA, MLA, etc). ProQuest databases link to full-text articles for several vendors and support the OpenURL protocol. ProQuest Historical Newspapers has an improved interface and will soon include the Los Angeles Times and Chicago Tribune. The company acquired SIRS Publishing, provider of content to school libraries, and bigchalk, a provider of databases and curriculum tools for K–12. In the full-text arena, it forged an agreement to distribute the full-text of the New England Journal of Medicine.

    PubMed Central is a free, unrestricted digital archive of peer-reviewed life sciences literature developed and managed by the National Center for Biotechnology Information at the National Library of Medicine. The currency of titles varies, with most titles having an embargo period of around six months. To be included in the archive, a journal must be covered by a major abstracting or indexing service (Medline, Agricola, Biosis, Chemical Abstracts, EMBASE, PsycINFO, or Science Citation Index), or it must have at least three editorial board members currently serving as principal investigators on research grants from major funding agencies. Recently, PubMed began accepting individual open access articles from journals that are not regular titles covered by PubMed.

A new, improved interface was implemented last year.

Gale has an agreement to distribute images from Corbis to educational institutions. The Eighteenth Century Collections Online was released and continues to be updated. There are plans to introduce Nineteenth Century Collections Online in 2004.

Thomson ISI began the "Century of Science" project to extend its coverage back to 1900 with bibliographic data from several journals with high-impact factors.

This collaboration will result in making the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews available via the InterScience interface.
