LA's Loyola Marymount U. Gets $20M for New Library

-- Library Journal, 5/20/2003

Los Angeles' Loyola Marymount University has received $20 million for a new university library from two foundations established by local real estate developer and philanthropist William Hannon. Hannon, who died in 1999, was a 1937 alumnus, a Regent Emeritus, and an Honorary Trustee of the university. The donation is the lead gift for the new William Hannon Library, a project estimated at $44 million. The library will be located on a bluff overlooking the Los Angeles basin. The design of the new library will include collaborative study spaces, a 24-hour study room, and other special areas designated for group use of music and video materials. A wireless network will be accessible in open areas, with hard-wired areas provided for the collaborative spaces. An automated storage and retrieval system (ASRS) will be installed, allowing the library to house nearly 1.5 million items with its high-density storage facility. Nearly all the paper-based resources will be housed in the ASRS unit, along with selected archival materials and a wide range of media formats. Loyola claims that delivery time of an item via ASRS from online request to receipt will take seven minutes.
