Keep On Constructin'

With 80 new buildings and 132 additions/renovations completed, our facilities future seems secure

By Bette-Lee Fox -- Library Journal, 12/15/2001

Building a future for our citizens would seem of paramount importance in light of recent events. The nation's public and academic libraries are doing their part, with continued energy and an influx of huge sums of money. These current projects (completed between July 1, 2000 and June 30, 2001) are a reminder that now more than ever we depend on information and the libraries and librarians who make it available to us.

This year's 80 new structures and 132 additions/renovations comprise 4,140,250 square feet and cost more than $686 million. In terms of land and lucre, that is a tremendous investment. Interestingly enough, most of that money came from local governments/library budgets (including bonds and banks) and contributions (95 percent), with federal and state coffers ponying up a smaller percentage of funding than it seems they ever have. Our people and our communities are standing behind libraries, even if our legislatures are not.

The cost of growth

Some of the larger new projects include the Fort Smith Public Library, AR (on our cover), at $13.9 million, the Southwest Regional Library of the Broward County Library, Pembroke Pines, FL, at $14 million, and the Des Plaines Public Library, IL, at $15.6 million. But one project that eclipses them all is the new Main Library of the Nashville Public Library, TN, encompassing 300,000 square feet and costing $83 million. The substantial additions/renovations include the African American Museum and Library at the Oakland Public Library, $11.2 million, and the Thomas Crane Public Library in Quincy, MA, $16.6 million.

Of the 42 academic projects, there are two new buildings at Howard University in Washington, DC (total $51 million), the Ferris Library for Information & Technology Education at Ferris State University in Michigan ($39 million), and the Harold B. Lee Library at Brig-ham Young University, Provo, UT ($51 million).

The big picture

Many of the building projects incorporated new and additional technology, more wide-open spaces, and better access to all library materials. Library architects (see p. 60) are depending on input from librarians and community groups before setting pencil to paper and pickax to pavement. The combination will make libraries more responsive to the needs of those they serve. And isn't that our primary goal?
