ARL: Women Making Less Than Men

Staff -- Library Journal, 3/1/1999

Although women academic library directors are earning more than their male counterparts, the same cannot be said for library staff. Overall, women in academic libraries are making about $3000 (6.5 percent) less annually than men, according to the Association of Research Libraries' Annual Salary Survey for 1998-99. The average overall salary for women was $48,430; the average salary for men was $51,696. The report also said that the median university salary was $45,775 in FY 1998-99; the median salary for nonuniversity librarians was $56,000. The beginning salary at university libraries was $30,000, and at nonuniversity libraries it was $29,877. More information can be found at www.arl.org.
