IMLS Head Frankel to Step Down; Successor Should be Librarian
Staff -- Library Journal, 2/22/1999
Diane Frankel will step down as Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services at the end of March. By law, the job rotates between an individual with library expertise and one with a background in museum service, so her successor should be a librarian, who would serve a four-year term. Frankel was originally appointed in 1993 by President Clinton to be the Director of the Institute of Museum Services, and led the agency through its transition to include federal library funding as well as museum programs. As part of the creation of the new agency combining both museum and library programs in 1996, Frankel reorganized the agency and initiated a new Office of Research and Technology. She will join the James Irvine Foundation as Program Director in Children, Youth and Families.
