Federal Investment in Internet Plan to Help University Libraries

Staff -- Library Journal, 2/1/1999

The FY2000 federal budget request will include an increase of $336 million (28 percent) for information technology research, Vice President Al Gore announced January 24. The funds will drive the Next Generation Internet (NGI), a network that will deliver information 1000 times faster than today's Internet. Legislation authorizing the NGI was passed by Congress last year. The NGI initiative is a multiagency federal research and development program, considered complementary to a parallel initiative, Internet2. Internet2 is a collaborative effort by more than 120 U.S. universities, working with partners in industry and government, to develop advanced Internet technologies and applications.
